Born in Brooklyn, NY, she graduated from Columbia Law school tied as top of the graduating class of 1959.

Upon graduating, none of the law firms in NYC would hire her, as she stated, “she had three strikes against her, Jewish, a woman, but mostly a mother”. She therefore went into teaching.
